Quote of the Week: Silent Strength

“Silence is a great source of strength”

Lao Tzu

This quote speaks volumes because silence doesn’t always come naturally for me.  For some it does and they are quite comfortable living, being and existing “inside the silence.”  Sometimes I wish silence did come naturally for me.  I have generally found myself wanting to express my thoughts or opinions, correct perceptions, or sometimes try to clarify my intentions. But I have learned…

Sometimes there is Strength in Silence

I once heard a saying…I’m not sure where it comes from…” opinions are like “bleep-holes”  everybody has one”  So the questions I ask, during those times of frustration when I’m pressed to voice my opinion, does it matter? Does it affect or change opinion? Does it alter thoughts, beliefs or behaviors?  Probably not.  As one of my favorite Dale Carnegie quotes says, “a man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still.” People don’t usually change their opinion, until and unless they want to—regardless of how adamant I am in expressing mine. So, I’ve learned…

Sometimes there is strength in silence.

In the heat of spirited debate, there often comes a point where neither party hears or cares to hear the assertions being made by the other…only that their individual thoughts are expressed.  Sort of like a boxing match where the only concern is in throwing the punch, maybe not always the best approach.  Like many, I’ve done it.  I’ve also come to learn there are times to be silent, and practice the first rule of negotiation – “the first one to talk loses.”  I remember a time when a colleague was expressing frustration with me on my handling of an issue.  “thought-punches,” were thrown – not disrespectfully, of course.  With the powerful blow of my silence, I stood firm in my position but said nothing. Thirty-seconds into my silence, my victory was quite evident. So I learned…

Sometimes there is strength in silence.

I like to think I know a lot…but let’s be real, I don’t know everything…in fact, there is probably more in this world that I don’t know.  But one thing’s for sure…you know that time, when you’re with a group of people, discussing a current event, an article, or an issue of some sort.  And someone speaks and it is clear, they don’t have a clue of what they are talking or what’s going on.  This is a time when…

…there is strength in silence.

While I’m the first to admit that silence may not always be the answer, I do however believe Proverbs 17:28 when it says even fools are thought wise if they keep silent and discerning if they hold their tongue.

We live and learn…
