Getting behind on commitments and taking on too much at once is incredibly stressful. When this happens, the stress steadily increases exponentially with every passing moment of the day. My mentor, coach, and friend listened to me during this stressful period and offered these wise words:
“If the thought of sitting down to complete a project, assignment or that thing, for a goal that is important to you, is too much, or requires more effort than you feel you have, consider this: Commit to just 15 minutes a day. Seriously, set an alarm if you must but commit yourself to taking a single bite each day.”
Most every day, from the time I received this message until the day I turned in the late project, I committed to 15 minutes a day. Gradually, I gained momentum and pushed through to get it finished.
So, here’s a Coaches Corner Fun Fact about Elephants by Desmond Tutu: “There is only one way to eat an elephant: a bite at a time.” They say you can eat an elephant one bite at a time. The same applies to our overwhelming tasks and goals. Essentially, during those time when everything in life seems to much, too overwhelming, too daunting, the impossible can be accomplished gradually by taking on just a little at a time. Break it down into manageable bites and commit to 15 minutes a day. You’ve got this!
Have you ever felt overwhelmed by life’s demands? How did you manage to push through? I’d love to hear your stories and tips! Please share your experiences in the comments below or share this post with someone who might need a little inspiration today. Let’s support each other in finding our momentum, one bite at a time.
Respectfully,
